Metastatic Bone Disease Management

OVERVIEW

Bone metastasis develops when cancer cells migrate from their original location to the bone. Almost all cancers can travel to the bone, with some forms of cancer more prone to this, such as prostate and breast cancer. Metastatic bone disease management is a sign of hope for patients. Our personalised management strategies aim to relieve pain, prevent or repair fractures, and significantly improve the patient’s quality of life.

SYMPTOMS OF METASTATIC BONE DISEASE

  • Bone pain
  • Fractures
  • Weakness of paralysis
  • Elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia)

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis is made using tests such as:

  • X-ray
  • Bone scan
  • CT scan
  • MRI scan
  • Biopsies

TREATMENT

The most widely executed forms of treatment for bone metastasis include radiation therapy, prescription medications and surgery.

  • Bone-strengthening medications are used for those with very thin, weakened bones, mainly due to osteoporosis, a degenerative disorder. The medications your doctor chooses to prescribe are made to reinforce the bones and alleviate pain due to bone metastasis.
  • A surgical procedure is performed to promote the strength of bones at risk of breaking. Instrumentation such as metal nails, plates and screws are used to secure the bones and reduce pain.
  • If bone metastasis causes bone breakage, patients can be comfortable with the fact that orthopaedic surgeons are dedicated to repairing the bone. Through the use of orthopaedic hardware (nails, plates and screws), they reinforce and secure the bone in place, providing a strong foundation for recovery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1Does bone metastasis spread quickly?
The speed at which bone metastasis spreads depends on the type of primary cancer. Some cancers, like lung or breast cancer, can spread to the bones relatively quickly, while others progress more slowly. Early detection and treatment are key to managing the spread effectively.
2What are the signs that cancer has spread to the bones?
Common symptoms of bone metastasis include persistent bone pain, fractures from minor injuries, swelling, fatigue, and high calcium levels in the blood. If you have a history of cancer and develop these symptoms, speak to your doctor for further testing.
3Can bone metastasis be treated?
Yes, bone metastasis can be managed with treatments such as radiation therapy, targeted drugs, hormone therapy, and pain management. While it may not be curable, treatment can help control symptoms, improve quality of life, and slow disease progression.
