Custom Implant Reconstruction

OVERVIEW

Custom implant reconstruction involves the treatment of complex orthopaedic pathology using custom made implants. Most orthopaedic conditions can be treated using a broad variety of widely available implants. In contrast, however, there are some conditions that are highly challenging to treat and may lend themselves to innovative surgery with custom made implants. For example, implants can be 3D printed to best fit a patient’s anatomy and unique bony pathology.

SPECIALISED DESIGN OF A CUSTOM IMPLANT

A custom implant, unlike a standard implant, is created based on detailed imaging studies such as CT scans to ensure precise fit and function in the bone.

CANDIDATES FOR CUSTOM-MADE IMPLANTS

Most orthopaedic pathology does not require the use of custom implants. Conditions requiring custom implants are rare. Usually, highly complex pathologies require specialized treatment and referral.  In the event that a surgeon recommends the use of a custom implant, a detailed discussion is needed to understand the risks and benefits.

Conditions that may require custom implants include large bone defects, tumours, and infections.
