Prof. Nando Ferreira is an internationally recognised orthopaedic surgeon specialising in musculoskeletal infection and post-traumatic limb reconstruction. As a Professor and Head of the Clinical Unit of Tumour, Sepsis, and Reconstruction at Stellenbosch University, he has dedicated his career to restoring mobility and improving the quality of life for patients facing some of the most challenging orthopaedic conditions. Since 2016, he has led a multidisciplinary team with an unwavering commitment to delivering cutting-edge care and advancing surgical techniques for complex limb deformities and injuries.
With over two decades of experience in orthopaedics, Prof. Ferreira’s expertise is rooted in a strong academic foundation. He holds a BSc in Human Physiology and Genetics and an MBChB from Stellenbosch University, followed by orthopaedic training at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His advanced training includes the Ilizarov technique for bone reconstruction in Russia, and his PhD research focused on innovative treatments for tibial non-unions. These experiences have not only shaped his surgical skills but also his approach to patient care. Prof. Ferreira is known for his ability to handle intricate reconstructive surgeries with precision, ensuring the best possible outcomes for his patients, and his compassion, which provides comfort and reassurance during what can be a challenging time for patients.
Prof. Ferreira’s surgical skills are complemented by his commitment to innovation and global collaboration. His research, which has been cited in leading orthopaedic journals, has made a significant impact on the field. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles and eight book chapters, and his expertise has earned him invitations to speak at more than 40 national and international congresses and to provide hands-on training to surgeons worldwide. As Director of the Stellenbosch University Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Fellowship, he has built an internationally recognised training program that attracts fellows from across the globe.

Whether managing infections, correcting deformities, or performing limb salvage procedures, Prof. Ferreira employs advanced techniques tailored to individual needs. Prof. Ferreira’s leadership extends beyond the operating theatre. He is a founding member and past President of the South African Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the South African Orthopaedic Journal. His international influence, demonstrated by invitations to chair sessions, his ability to deliver keynote lectures, and his contribution to global guidelines on deformity correction and infection management, connects him to a worldwide network of orthopaedic professionals.
Driven by a passion for helping patients regain function and confidence, Prof. Ferreira’s collaborations with engineering, microbiology, and pharmacology experts have advanced treatments for limb deformities and musculoskeletal infections. He has also worked with Médecins Sans Frontières to improve trauma care in resource-limited settings. These collaborations emphasize the profound impact of teamwork in advancing orthopaedic care, a testament to his commitment to making life-changing orthopaedic care accessible to all.
